Ever been tempted by entering the world of an accountancy? While the profession still has a dour image, it has plenty of exciting potential – not least the financial stability it offers. In today’s guide, we’re going to go through five of the essential things you’ll need to make it in the accountancy world. Read on to discover if this rewarding and lucrative career might be the right choice for you.
A love of numbers
Accounting is, of course, a numbers game. You’ll need to be interested in maths, enjoy working things out, and have a keen eye for small detail. You don’t have to be a mathematical genius, of course: calculators and computer programs will help. But, it is important to have a basic interest in maths and be able to turn your hand to algebra and fractions.
It’s also handy if you have an interest in the law, and understand the importance of doing things the right way. Honesty is a good quality for any career, of course, but there are somewhere it is a necessity. As an accountant, you may find yourself with difficult decisions to make, and it is essential you have a squeaky clean attitude to life. Blackmail, dodgy dealings, and cooked books are all likely to end up with you in serious legal trouble.
You will also need to be an excellent communicator as an accountant if you want to be successful. You will have to write well, and be able to describe complex accounting principles to anyone outside the industry in simple terms. You’ll need to write, too, and offer excellent analyses of people’s financial situations. You will need to be able to persuade people of the benefits of your ideas – it’s a little bit like being a lawyer. Persuasion is key to your success!
You can’t expect success in accountancy without the right qualifications. And, there is a lot of work ahead of you if you are starting from scratch. You can go to university, of course. East London College offer a range of accounting courses, for example. But you can also get on the job training. Many firms will offer you qualification opportunities if you show enough promise.
As an accountant, you can pretty much work anywhere. However, if you want to succeed, you might be well off specialising in a certain industry or area. It’s important to have a love of your job, and it will spur you on to much more success. If you love music, for example, then maybe think about becoming a music industry accountant. It doesn’t get more rock and roll than that!
Ability to work with people
The better you are with people, the more success you will have in your career. It’s as simple as that. While the image of the accountant is slightly outdated, there is some truth in it still. And, if you have a bright personality and are positive, friendly, and willing, you will stand out from the competition.
So – fancy the life of an accountant? Why not give it a go? Good luck!
