Anyone who runs their own business will testify that it can be challenging at times. Though you may have employees to help out, ultimately the buck stops with you. Having any semblance of a home life often goes out of the window. The thing you felt so passionate about when you started has a tendency to get lost in the daily grind. so How can you make your business more efficient.

Make Your Business More Efficient

If this is your experience, it is important to review your role and look at make your business more efficient.

Ways to make your business more efficient

Are You Working In Or On Your Business?

Ask yourself this question. Are you working in or on your busines? If you are too involved in the day-to-day tasks, you may not be making the most of your skills. Other areas may be suffering as a result, such as identifying new revenue streams. Review your position and identify areas that can be delegated or outsourced. Focus your attention where it is needed.

Do You / Your Staff Have Adequate Training?

Is your knowledge current? Are you familiar with the latest trends and advances in your industry? Are your staff adequately trained to fulfill their roles? Look for areas that would improve the running of your business, with the right expertise. If you work with large data sources and structures, you might want to consider Informatica training or a similar package. Or, a member of staff has been working on your social media, it might be worth investing in training in this area.

Are Your Employees Motivated?

Motivate your employees by making them part of the decision-making process. Ask for their opinions and ideas. Respect that they have different skills and experience to you and can bring a fresh perspective. Consider different ways of working that will suit everyone. Trial flexible working hours and working from home.

Are You Suffering From Burnout?

One of the issues that frequently arises with business owners is burnout. They work day and night on their business and take few breaks. The aim is to complete as much work as possible and to move the business forward. However, very quickly the latter becomes true. They become overworked and tired. Rather than achieving more, they become less productive. Their concentration suffers and in extreme cases, they become physically ill.

If you recognize this in yourself, it’s time to take action. Book some time away from work. This may seem impossible when things are so busy but it is essential. Arrange this in advance with colleagues and clients and ensure the business is managed while you’re away.

Set realistic working hours. It may not be possible to clock off at five each evening. Perhaps schedule two days in the week when you can do this. Don’t let anything get in the way of that. For the remaining days agree that you will work late but set a time limit and stick to it.

Working hours that are reasonable and achievable will allow you to be more productive. You will also be less tired and are likely to be much happier.

There will be days when everything seems to be going wrong. Think back to what inspired you in the early days. What originally drew you to start your business? Get out of the office and network with other people from the industry. Attend some seminars and inspiring talks. Look for relevant TED talks online.

You started your business for a reason. You were passionate about something and wanted to strike out on your own. Rediscover that passion and rekindle your enthusiasm and make your business more efficient.
